IONODES used at largest port in Latin America

Fri, November 26 2010

IONODES Inc, of Montreal, Canada, a young technology company specialized in developing video processing appliances and software for large enterprises and government organizations aimed at optimizing their distributed digital IP Video Management Solutions, today announced that an important Brasilian Port Authority has implemented Port and Channel monitoring solutions using IONODES ION-E100 technology.

The Port of Santos, in the State of Sao Paulo, Brasil, is the largest port in Latin America by cargo volume and several other important metrics. It is the primary port of entry to the Brasilian economic center of Sao Paulo. The Port implemented its initial installation in order to comply with the International Maritime Organization’s International Ship and Port Facilities Security (ISPS) Code standards for port security, which requires video surveillance and access control systems.

The IONODES ION-E100 encoders were selected for several reasons:

Functionality as expansion in a legacy encoder Omnicast environment

The initial system was a legacy GenetecTM solution but delivered through an OEM reseller of the software solution. The original solution utilized MPEG4 encoders (not state of the art, but not obsolete). The IONODES encoders were added to the solution and the VMS was cross graded from OEM version of Omnicast® to Omnicast 3.5® and upgraded to Omnicast® Enterprise v4.6. The client was able to merge the lower performance legacy hardware with the newer ION-E100 units such that it is transparent to the operators.

Knowledge of large scale solutions

IONODES has been focused on optimizing all the features and benefits of enterprise VMS systems, such as the GenetecTM Omnicast® VMS solution, in large scale enterprise applications. While many encoders and IP cameras are “integrated” to VMS solutions, there is a wide gap between an optimized device for a solution and one that can simply stream a video feed into it.

The ION-E100 configuration parameters and settings are stored within on-board solid state memory. The unit also has micro SD support, allowing for video buffering, and with new larger capacity micro SD’s, up to 16 GB of video storage capability.

A unique storage on the edge feature has been developed to allow the encoder to communicate to the VMS archiver and index the video into the VMS database of retained video, as well as transferring the video off the edge device to the regular storage area. This allows for seemless retrieval of the video recorded at the edge when the network was down.

Most other solutions with SD storage found on the market today do not explain that their network downtime video on SD must be retrieved manually off the edge device storage and that this video is not indexed into the archive registry of the VMS.

H.264 Multi Profile Video Performance

Allowing for two unique streams of H.264 video and an addditional stream of MJPEG video, the unit is geared towards lower network bandwidth and storage GB requirements for equivalent video performance in terms of frames per second and resolution.

“IONODES is pleased to have been selected for this important Brasilian Port Authority Project as one of our early client installations. Brasil is a very large market with a lot of opportunity for best in class technology, since Brasilians are early adoptors of technology. This port project is important for IONODES since we have tried to design the feature set of the ION-E100 to facilitate easy installation and maintenance of the system from a network perspective, minimizing the need to go to the edge devices out on the poles after initial installation, which has always been a complaint of personel maintaining Port and Canal Surveillance Systems ” notes Kris Hornung of IONODES.
